What sparked your interest in database technologies, and how has your journey led you to your current role at IBM?
I took a database class in university and really enjoyed it. Shortly after that I had an opportunity for a student internship at IBM in Toronto, in the Db2 System Test team, where I worked on Db2 for OS/2 1.0. IBM offered me a full-time job after graduation, where I went from customer support, to development, to worldwide technical sales, and various other roles around and outside of Db2 since then.
In your opinion, what are the critical considerations for organizations looking to transition their data infrastructure to the cloud, and how can they ensure a smooth migration process?
First and foremost, don’t believe that cloud is always less expensive. Do your homework. There are certainly workloads that make sense in the cloud, but many companies that had an “all in on cloud” approach a few years ago are rethinking that and taking a hybrid approach now. My advice is to think about how you can leverage both your on-premises data center and the cloud, but using the same technologies. For example, Db2 is built for both worlds, and can run anywhere. And using a foundation of Red Hat OpenShift, organizations can deploy and manage their applications in the same way, regardless of whether it’s on-premises or in the cloud.
With the introduction of new data management architectures supporting analytics workloads, like data lakehouses, where does Db2 fit in?
For extremely fast analytics and BI, nothing beats a data warehouse. Db2 Warehouse is still going to be a top choice for workloads like that. However, many organizations are supporting workloads in their warehouse that probably don’t belong there. These workloads can be offloaded to a data lake or data lakehouse, on much cheaper storage. In fact, Db2 Warehouse has been enhanced to be able to work directly with data in data lakes and lakehouses, to lower the cost of storage and to better integrate with data lakes and lakehouses.
